Is the Google Android logo 'stolen'?
Sep 02, 2010 - 4:11 PM - by JohnDroid

Engadget just broke a news story about how it 'appears' that Google may have misappropriated some artwork from an old Atary Lynx game (kudos if you had one back in the day, I did). The game in question is 'Gauntlet: The Third Encounter' and as you might have guessed features an Android shaped very similar to the Android robot that we know.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there are only so many million permutations of what the human typically envisions when they picture an "Android" in their head. Eventually, somewhere, your going to find that likeness on multiple products. I think it's going to be a stretch for conspiracy theorists to really believe that this icon is ripped from Atari's long forgotten arcade collection.

What are your thoughts?

Vlingo adds voice check-ins to Foursquare and other features
Sep 02, 2010 - 1:51 PM - by JohnDroid

It looks like Vlingo is making headway in cutting deals with other popular Android apps because they've just created some integration with Foursquare. Vlingo allows you to use voice commands to perform common tasks. Some examples include updating your status on Facebook and Twitter.

If you are unsure what we are talking about, take a look at the embedded youtube video above as it pretty much shows you what's up.

I don't think Foursquare has really hit a critical mass with our userbase yet, but I'd love to hear from people out there who are really using it on a daily basis. Please let us know how it works and how the Vlingo integration makes it a better or worse experience.

Samsung Galaxy Tab News Roundup
Sep 02, 2010 - 11:04 AM - by JohnDroid

There is so much news coming out about the Samsung Galaxy Tab and other Android Tablets in general that we just can't keep flooding the interwebs with news posts on them. What we can do however is to do a nice news round-up and summary for you guys who may be interested.

First off let me make sure that I get a plug in here for our Android Tablet Forum dedicated to all things in the Android Tablet world, including the section setup just for the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

As usual, Engadget has a great hands on preview here: Samsung Galaxy Tab preview -- Engadget

Next up we have Android Central who seems to be bringing a ton of Galaxy Tab news recently.

Galaxy Tab specs vs Apple iPad, Official Galaxy Tab commercial, Hands on with the Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab apps and Video demo, with video.

The BBC has some coverage here too about the Galaxy Tab, calling it Samsung's first tablet computer... which isn't really true:

BBC News - Galaxy Tab unveiled as Samsung's first tablet computer

ITWriting.com has an article up that really talks about the fact that the Galaxy Tab is just the first of many iPad clones and Android Tablets to hit the market:

Verizon Android Line Up Expands with the Samsung Gem
Sep 02, 2010 - 10:07 AM - by danDroid

We would like to welcome the Samsung Gem as the next Android phone heading to Verizon. Engadget has just posted a sneak peak from the Best Buy September buyer's guide that confirms the Samsung Gem is coming soon. The device isn't quite on par with the current lineup of high-end Droids we love, but the specs reported so far appear to be good for an entry level phone. The phone is expected to launch with Android 2.1 w/TouchWiz, Swype, 3.2 megapixel camera, 16 microSD expansion. Be sure to check out the new forum dedicated to the Samsung Gem here: Samsung Gem - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum
